How to Work Less and Spend More Time with Family

Today, we’re talking about something that’s on everyone’s mind—teams, time, and family. Whether you’re trying to grow your real estate team, spend more time at home, or increase your income, it all boils down to one thing: focus. What should you focus on, what should you delegate, and how do you create leverage in both your business and your life?

The Problem with Reactive Marketing

Let’s talk about strategy. Too often, we find ourselves stuck in reactive marketing—doing what needs to be done in the moment without understanding the “why” behind it. It’s like driving down the freeway at 60 miles per hour in first gear. The engine’s screaming, and you know something’s going to give. You either have to slow down and retool or learn how to shift gears and perform at a higher level with less effort.

Building a Real Strategic Plan

So, how do we shift gears? It starts with being crystal clear about where you want to go. Today, I want to help you build a real strategic plan. This isn’t just about your business—it’s about your life. What do you want your life to look like five years from now? This is a question many struggle to answer because, for so many, business has become their life. But it’s crucial to define what lifestyle means to you.

What Do You Want Your Life to Look Like?

Take a moment to think about it. What does your ideal life look like in five years? Maybe you want to take three weeks off each year without having to check your messages. Maybe you want a lake house where your kids will want to gather for the holidays. Or perhaps you want your retirement fully funded and your kids’ college tuition paid for. Whatever it is, get specific. The clearer you are, the easier it is to achieve.

Aligning Your Business with Your Life Goals

Once you’ve defined your ideal lifestyle, the next step is to align your business with those goals. Ask yourself, “What kind of business do I need to build to create this lifestyle?” Then, break it down:

  • Three years from now: What needs to be happening in your business to be on track to achieve your five-year lifestyle goals? Consider your transaction numbers, team structure, and net income.
  • One year from now: What needs to be in place 12 months from today to support your long-term goals? This could involve identifying lead generation sources, setting up scalable systems, or hiring key team members.

The Power of a Core Motivating Value

I remember a seminar I did at Lake of the Ozarks. A woman approached me afterward, saying she wanted to make $100,000 a year. When I asked her why, she initially gave me a generic answer. But after some reflection, she revealed that $100,000 was her combined household income before her divorce, and she was tired of telling her son they couldn’t afford things. That was her core motivating value—a powerful “why” that drove her to take action.

When you identify your core motivating value, it gives you the drive to do the hard things. Whether it’s prospecting, following up with leads, or anything else, knowing your “why” makes all the difference.

Taking Action: What Are You Going to Do?

Now, let’s get specific. What needs to happen six months from today to put you on track for your one-year and five-year goals? Maybe you need to delegate more tasks, focus on prospecting, or streamline your operations. Whatever it is, commit to making those changes.

What Will You Do for Your Family?

Here’s something I’ve learned: We’re often willing to do more for our families than we are for ourselves. We’ll sacrifice, work hard, and make commitments because we know it impacts their lives. If you can tie your business goals to your family’s well-being, you’ll find the motivation to push through challenges.
