It was 2014, and a series of circumstances brought Verl Workman right to the edge of a new and exciting opportunity. He and his daughter, Brianne Ika, boarded a plane to Utah with ideas for a new business.
They wrote out a mind map on napkins. Though the specifics were still blurry, the idea was clear: They wanted to create a business coaching company that could actually help people get their lives back.
For Brianne, it was a no-brainer to follow Verl into new and unknown waters. She'd been working with Verl for years, and she threw in with him. It only made sense, as she’d always looked up to her father. Brianne’s very matter-of-fact as she looks back on it now. “I wasn’t going to leave him. I’d quit my job, I’d stopped going to school, I’d changed all my plans, and gone to work with him. He couldn’t do it all alone — we needed each other.”
Verl had been a professional speaker and coach for years before he was fired. This change showed him an opportunity to do even more. Of it, he says, “I wanted to make a real, long-term difference in peoples’ lives — not just a moment of standing ovation or a clap from the back of the room.”
So, Brianne and Verl got to planning how they could make that change happen.
They both knew they needed some additional help to get Workman Success Systems up and running. They started with Terri Murphy, a long-time friend and fellow real estate professional.
“It was a whirlwind,” says Brianne, “We immediately flew out to Terri’s office to get her help designing our first program. We didn’t even have a name yet.”
From there, Verl and Brianne designed more courses and developed their business structure with help from powerful partners in their network, relying on their own abundant experience to create the products, structure, systems, and processes that Workman Success Systems uses to this day.
In short order, they’d gone from mind maps on napkins to building a successful coaching company — and it was only just beginning.
