I’m diving into one of my favorite topics: “How to Have it All”. Can you really have a great business, a fulfilling life, and strong relationships? The answer is a resounding YES! Every aspect of our lives, whether business or personal, is either created accidentally or intentionally. The secret to having it all lies in strategic planning.
Creating an Intentional Life
I want to introduce you to one of my favorite resources: the One Page Business Plan. I’m going to share with you how you can use this plan to create a life that truly serves you. Most entrepreneurs end up creating businesses that consume their lives. Think about it—are your friends all from your business? Are your clients your only social circle? Do you have close relationships with your family and old friends? If your business becomes your entire life, have you truly created the life you want?
Defining What It Means to Live Well
Start by taking a good look at your life. My One Page Business Plan asks you to define what “living well” means to you. For example, I remember meeting A.D. Kessler, the grandfather of creative real estate. Despite being a billionaire, at 78, he was still knocking on doors to help families in distress. For him, living well meant serving others.
What does living well mean to you? Is it spending more time with your kids, having date nights with your spouse, or taking vacations without worrying about work? Is it about serving your community or supporting causes you care about?
Setting Priorities and Planning
Once you define what living well means to you, it’s time to figure out what your business needs to produce to support that lifestyle. My tool, the My Perfect Week Scheduler, uses a time-blocking system to help you plan. On Sunday night, or whenever you have uninterrupted time, plan your week. Start with non-negotiables like family activities, date nights, and personal commitments. These are sacred—never let business encroach on them.
Next, block out time for money-making activities. This approach ensures that your business supports your lifestyle rather than becoming your life. It’s all about intentional creation. Decide what’s important, prioritize those things, and stick to your plan.
Reflecting on Your 5 F’s
Here are some activities to help you clearly define your goals and priorities:
- Reflect on the 5 F’s: Family, Faith, Friends, Fun, and Fitness. What do these mean to you?
- Define Your Lifestyle: What kind of lifestyle do you want? Fancy cars and big houses might not bring happiness. For me, making a difference in others’ lives brings more joy.
- Build Your Business Around Your Lifestyle: Share your life goals with your partner, family, and team. When you articulate your goals, they become more real, and those around you will support you.
Progress Over Perfection
Focus on progress, not perfection. Set high goals and aim to “fail up”. If you always hit your goals, you’re not challenging yourself enough. As a leader, understand your team’s goals and help them achieve them. In return, you’ll find you achieve your own goals.
Being Present and Practicing Intentional Creation
Having it all means maintaining balance. Be present wherever you are—whether with family or at work. Practice intentional creation by deciding to create the lifestyle you want and making choices aligned with your priorities. When you’re clear about your priorities, decision-making becomes easier.
The One Thing to Focus On
Recently, on a coaching call, we focused on a single measurable goal: getting two appointments with potential clients each week. This simple focus can lead to tremendous success. What’s your equivalent of the two appointments? Identify it, measure it, and let it guide your actions.
